What is the Common Procurement Vocabulary (CPV)?
The CPV is a classification system established by Regulation (EC) No 2195/2002 and updated in 2008 and 2024. It's the EU's standard vocabulary for classifying the subject of public procurement contracts. Every tender published on TED must be tagged with at least one CPV code, making it the fundamental filing system for all European public procurement.
How is the CPV hierarchy structured?
CPV codes are 8-digit numbers with 1 check digit. They follow a strict hierarchy: the first 2 digits define the Division, the first 3 digits the Group, first 4 digits the Class, and the full 8 digits the Category. There are 45 Divisions, 272 Groups, 1,575 Classes and 9,454 Categories in the current vocabulary.
Do I need to use the exact CPV code to find relevant tenders?

Has the CPV changed recently?

Which countries use CPV?
